सदयं हृदयं यस्य भाषितं सत्यभूषितम् । कायः परहिते यस्य कलिस्तस्य करोति किम् ॥ Meaning: What harm can Kali do to him whose heart is full of kindness, whose speech is adorned with truth and whose body is for the good of others.
प्रकुर्वते दह्यमानाः सुतीव्रेण नीचाः परयशोऽग्निना। अशक्तास्तत्पदं गन्तुं ततो निन्दां ।। Meaning : The despicable(lowly) burn intensely in the fire (of jealousy) on others’ prosperity. Incapable of taking those measures themselves, they criticize (tirelessly).

गु’ शब्दस्तु अन्धकारः ’रु’ शब्दस्तु तन्निवारकः | अन्धकार निरोधत्वात् गुरुरित्यभिधीयते || Meaning: The word ‘gu’ stands for darkness, the word ‘ru’ stands for the removal of that. Due to removal of darkness, (He) is called a ‘guru’ (teacher).
यथा खनन् खनित्रेण नरो वार्यधिगच्छति | तथा गुरुगतां विद्यां शुश्रूषुरधिगच्छति || – मनुस्मृति Meaning: Just as a person gets to the water by digging with a spade, similarly does one attain vidyaa (knowledge) from a guru (teacher) by serving him.
गुरवो बहवः | दुर्लभः स गुरुर्लोके सन्ति शिष्यवित्तापहारकाः शिष्यचित्तापहारकः || – समयोचितपद्यमालिका Meaning: There are a lot of teachers who take away the wealth of the student. A teacher who captures the thoughts of the student is hard to find in this world.
अष्टौ गुणा पुरुषं दीपयंति प्रज्ञा सुशीलत्वदमौ श्रुतं च। पराक्रमश्चबहुभाषिता च दानं यथाशक्ति कृतज्ञता च॥ Meaning: Eight qualities adorn a man -intellect, good character, self-control, study of scriptures, valor, less talking, charity as per capability and gratitude.
मूर्खस्य पञ्च चिन्हानि गर्वो दुर्वचनं तथा । क्रोधश्च दृढवादश्च परवाक्येष्वनादरः ॥ Meaning: There are five signs of fools – Pride, abusive language, anger, stubborn behaviour and disrespect for other people’s opinion.
सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियं। प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयात् एष धर्मः सनातनः॥ Meaning: Speak truth, speak nice things sweetly. Don’t speak bitter truth. Don’t speak incorrect things even nicely. This is eternal practice.
