The most awaited moment has finally come to an end. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has a new name. From now on, Mumbai Airport will be known as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. The renaming comes nearly two years after a resolution was passed in Maharashtra Assembly.
Confirming the development, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted, “Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is now Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Congratulations to the people of Maharashtra, the long pending demand is now fulfilled. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for the concern towards the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra.”
The decision to insert the word Maharaj in the names of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was taken by the Maharashtra government in December 2016. The request to add the word ‘Maharaj’ was made by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MP Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, who felt that more respect must be given to the great Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Mumbai airport was formerly known as Sahar International Airport and was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in 1999.
