Woman DCP ‘transferred’ after raid on CPM office in Thiruvananthapuram

JANUARY 27, 2019

Hours after Deputy Commissioner of Police Chaithra Teresa John raided a CPM office in Thiruvananthapuram late on Thursday, she was relieved of charge as DCP law and order.

Soon after a group of DYFI workers pelted stones on the Medical College police station in Thiruvananthapuram, following the arrest of two youth leaders in a case registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Chaithra ordered a raid as some of those involved in stone-pelting were said to be hiding there. This left the CPM district leadership sore as the raid was conducted by the police under the Home department headed by none other than Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The raid at the party office at Mettukada proved futile as none was found there. CPM district leadership is said to have later filed a complaint to police higher-ups against Chaithra. The party was already unhappy with her as she was said to be behind framing charges against some of the NGO Union leaders involved in the attack on the SBI treasury branch in Thiruvananthapuram during the two-day national trade union stir early in January.

Chaithra was transferred from law and order to the women’s cell immediately on instructions, allegedly from the Chief Minister’s office.

However, official sources denied such a transfer and said she had been given additional charges when DCP Aditya was assigned for Sabarimala duty. She was ‘relieved of the additional charges’ when the DCP rejoined, they claimed.
