After Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev has turned down Pakistan PM designate Imran Khan’s invite to the swearing-in ceremony. Putting India first, the legendary cricketer has confirmed that he would not be attending the swearing-in ceremony on August 18.
While PTI had flip-flopped over inviting Indian cricketers as well as leaders of SAARC including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for Imran Khan’s swearing-in ceremony. PTI leader Faisal Javed, however, announced on August 10 that cricket legends from India Kapil Dev, Navjyot Singh Sidhu, and Sunil Gavaskar have been invited to attend oath-taking ceremony of Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan.
Reports, however, said that Kapil Dev refused to attend the ceremony citing ‘personal reason’. On August 12, Gavaskar conveyed to Khan that he would not be able to attend the event as he had prior work commitments. On the contrary, cricketer-turned-politician Navjyot Singh Sidhu has accepted the invitation.
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had condemned Sidhu’s decision to travel to Pakistan and called it ‘treachery’. Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), which won 116 seats in the National Assembly in the July 25 national elections, is set to form a government on August 18. Initial reports had suggested that leaders of SAARC countries including PM Modi would be invited for the swearing-in ceremony.
