Sasikala now prisoner number ‘420’, not Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu!

In a historic judgement, V K Sasikala has been convicted by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate asset case and a jail term of four years has been upheld.  The Supreme Court has held VK Sasikala, AIADMK chief, guilty of helping former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa amass illicit wealth worth over 60 crores in the 1990s and has ordered Sasikala to surrender immediately before the police. Along with Sasikala, Sasikala’s sister-in-law Ilavarasi and Sasikala’s nephew V N Sudhakaran have also said to be played role in huge corruption.

The case was filed by Dr Subramanian Swamy against J Jayalalitha and Sasikala for involving in making illicit wealth through wrong ways. This is again a big victory to Swamy who has been relentlessly fighting against various corruption cases.

The bench of justices PC Ghose and Amitava Royset aside the Karnataka High court decision to acquit AIADMK Sasikala in the disproportionate assets case and upheld the trial court verdict sentencing her to four year jail term.

This is a massive blow to Sasikala who was aiming to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after Amma’s death. Sasikala will be now barred from contesting any election up to six years after serving jail term for four years. So in total, she will be barred from contesting elections for total of ten years which is a body blow to her ambitions. This is indeed a land mark judgement convicting the most powerful person of Tamil Nadu.

This judgement will lead to tectonic shift in the politics of Tamil Nadu since the Sasikala and the Mannurgudi mafia will now be completely thrown out of power centre of the Chief Minister’s office. The future developments will be interesting to watch.
