In a video that went viral on WhatsApp in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, 18 September, terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen threatened security forces and government employees in the state of dire consequences if they don’t quit their jobs within four days, The Times of India reported.
The two-minute video reportedly shows pictures of security forces and a Hizbul banner with a voice-over issuing the threat.
In the video, security forces and government employees have been asked to upload their resignations online as proof. It also threatens to kill family members of security forces if they don’t resign.
According to TOI, police have confirmed the authenticity of the video. The voice in the video is believed to be of spokesperson Umar Ibn Khitaab, whose name appears in English.
The voice also said that a member of the group was “in the locality” with a message for the families of security forces.
“Let us and the world see that you all rejected the occupation and joined our struggle for independence (of Kashmir from India). But let it be clear that your resignations will not be accepted after four days. All you will get is death at our hands, you all will be murdered,” the voice threatened, as quoted by TOI.
The voice further said if security forces don’t plan to come home, their families will be killed instead. It also warned that they shouldn’t risk their lives for “mere Rs 6,000.”
Security officials told NDTV that posters carrying threats have also come up in many villages. “The threat issued through small videos and posters doesn’t appear to be very serious, but definitely has potential to cause serious concerns,” a senior Home Ministry official told NDTV.
Officials told NDTV that these videos have gone viral in the last 12 hours and the ministry is worried about the repercussions.
