A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly slaughtering a cow in his house in north-east Delhi’s Nand Nagri, the police said.
Following the arrest, police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any tension, they said.
The police said the accused, Ubaid Wahabi (28), is a resident of L-Block in Nand Nagri. His accomplice Shehzad is absconding.
A case under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of the IPC has been registered at Nand Nagri police station, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Atul Thakur.
The police received a call around 4 a.m. on Sunday and were told that some cows were being slaughtered at Nand Nagri’s L- Block. By the time they reached the spot, the accused had fled. “Two calves were found alive in a house, while two slaughtered animals were lying in another room. Ubaid was arrested later from near the house,” said a police officer.
The bodies of the animals have been sent for post-mortem. The two calves have been sent to a cow shelter home.
“We are interrogating Ubaid and trying to find out from where he had brought the animals and where he was going to supply the meat,” said Mr. Thakur.
After hearing about the incident, a group of cow vigilantes attempted to disrupt law and order in the area, but the situation was brought under control, the police said, adding that the protesters were dispersed promptly.
