Following the footsteps of Gujarat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA government in Jharkhand has decided to commission a giant statue of tribal revolutionary Birsa Munda.
BJP’s Jharkhand president Laxman Gilua on Tuesday announced that the party has proposed to the Raghubar Das government to build a 100 feet long statue of Munda in Ranchi. The chief minister has also consented to build the statue from the state exchequer, Gilua added.
The announcement came less than a week before the scheduled unveiling of a 182-meter-statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sadhu Bet island on the banks of Narmada river.
Gilua said the statue will be a tribute to Munda, who died in British captivity at a jail in Ranchi after leading a tribal uprising. The statue will be set up at the jail complex where Das laid the foundation of a tribal museum earlier this month.
Gilua, a MP from Singbhum seat, also said party workers, office bearers and leaders will bring soil from tribal religious places of worship from all 4,402 panchayats of the state for building the statue.
Notably the AJSU Party, the BJP’s ally in Jharkhand government, had earlier this year announced that it will build a 150 feet statue of Munda in Bundu block in Ranchi district.
