Looks like Japan is smitten with India’s folk-art form Madhubani. Japan has reportedly requested India to send a team of Madhubani artists to Japan so that their trains can be engraved with Mithila art form.

New Delhi: It seems like Japan is smitten with India’s folk-art Madhubani. Madhubani/Mithila is a traditional art form which originates from Bihar and is famous worldwide. Japan has reportedly requested India to send a team of Madhubani artists to Japan so Japanese trains can have Madhubani paintings on them.

According to a recent Dainik Bhaskar report, after seeing the beautiful Madhubani painting on Indian Railways train coaches, Japan has asked railway ministry to send a team of Mithila artists so the art form can be engraved on Japanese trains as well.

It may be noted that Mithila or Madhubani art is native to Bihar’s Mithila region. The art form is popular for unique and colourful geometrical patterns. Last year in July, in an attempt to promote local art and culture, express trains such as Rajdhani Express and Sampark Kranti Express, originating from Bihar were decorated with Madhubani paintings. Around 22 coaches of the Patna Rajdhani express were the first to showcase the traditional paintings inside and outside the coaches.

United Nations even appreciated the move and tweeted a photograph of one of the coaches of the train and said, “How beautiful are these Indian Railways trains! Women from Bihar painted these coaches with traditional Mithila art, also known as Madhubani, using their fingers, tigs, matchsticks & brushes with natural dyes & pigments!”

Worth mentioning here is that Railways has also started station beautification drive which includes painting the station with beautiful wall paintings and murals. This drive was launched from the Madhubani stations where artists painted the station for free. Madhubani railway station even won an award in station beautification competition.
