NEW DELHI: Five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand today came out in support of the bull-taming sport of jallikattu, saying it should be respected since its a Tamil cultural symbol.
“I’m all for animal rights+ , but here that is not the point. Tradition and livelihood are,” Anand tweeted.
Anand also praised young people who’ve taken to the streets across Tamil Nadu toprotest against the Supreme Court’s ban+ on the sport.
Anand joins a long list of public figures who’ve expressed support for the jallikattu, which includes Kollywood icons Rajinikanth+ and Kamal Hassan.
His remarks come on a day when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam requested Prime Minister+ Narendra Modi to promulgate an ordinance to lift the ban on the sport.
The PM told Panneerselvam that while the Centre appreciates the “cultural significance” of jallikattu, the matter is sub-judice and a final order is awaited.
