ISIS trying to gain control in Syria, Iraq; terror group still active having around 30,000 terrorists

Aug 16, 2018

The massive assault launched by the United States-led global coalition destroyed the most dangerous terrorist organization i.e Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. But still, the terror organization is active in the two countries having around 30,000 terrorists.

Notably, the United Nations (UN) released a report saying that between 20,000 to 30,000 terrorists are active in the two countries including Syria and Iraq. The report also said that while many of ISIS top commanders and strategists have been killed, the figure includes fully trained members and a significant component of many thousands of active foreign terrorist fighters.

The UN further added that the terror organization still has hundreds of millions of dollars in funds. The report from UN comes a week after Pentagon told the US Congress ISIS has 14,000 fighters in Syria and 17,000 in Iraq.

Iraq and Syria both were affected severely due to self-proclaimed caliphate ISIS captured many important governorates. Thousands of civilians lost their life. In Iraq, a US-backed Iraqi coalition offensive succeeded in driving Isis out of Mosul in July 2017, after nine months of vicious fighting.

On the other side, US-backed Kurdish-Arab militias seized the so-called caliphate’s de facto capital of Raqqa of Syria last October. Meanwhile, the Syrian government and Russian forces declared the group defeated in Syria after they recaptured Deir Ezzor at the end of the year. Importantly, ISIS terror organization stunned the world when in 2014 they swept across the Syrian border into Iraq and seized major parts of the two countries.
