The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested a man on the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, after his wife alleged that he had given her triple talaq. This is the first such case after the ordinance on triple talaq came into effect. The police arrested Zikru Rehman, a resident of Malpura area, after his wife Tarannum Begum complained to CM Yogi Adityanath alleging that her husband had given her triple talaq. According to the complaint, Tarannum Begum reported that she had been married to Zikru Rehman for five years and has three kids from the marriage. She said that she was being endlessly tortured by Rehman since marriage and was given triple talaq by him last week after marrying a girl from the madrasa where he was teaching. She claimed that she had been kicked out of the house after being given triple talaq, following which she requested the chief minister to take action against Rehman. Tarannum was contacted by the Chief Minister’s office regarding the complaint, and upon verification of the facts, the local police were instructed to take action in the matter. Acting immediately, the police arrested Zikru Rehman under the Muslim marriage Protection Act. Expressing her happiness over the quick action by the UP Chief Minister’s office, Tarannum Begum told India Today that she always had faith that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will definitely take action in her case and she was very grateful for the prompt action. Commenting on the police action in the triple talaq matter, social activist Amir Qureshi said that it is heartening to see that the government is finally taking the right steps to earn the trust of millions of Muslim women living in the country. He said that this new act will teach the Muslim men a lesson that wives are not their property and should be treated with respect and dignity.
