Aurangabad: Maharashtra police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old self-styled godman for allegedly forcing several male devotees into unnatural sex for over a decade. The matter came to light after audio and video clips of the assaults went viral on social media with the accused, Asif Noori, sexually abusing men.

A native of Parbhani, Noori lured men from districts in Marathwada such as Nanded and Parbhani. A report by Times of India suggested that the accused preyed on married men by claiming to have supernatural powers that he could use to resolve all of their problems. A preliminary police investigation has steered officials to the belief that Noori took his victims to a room where he drugged them on the pretext of performing a ritual and forcibly had unnatural sex with them after. Law enforcement officials probing the case have said that some of Noori’s aides may have also joined him during the sexual assaults.

Just last week, another self-styled godman was arrested in Haryana for allegedly raping his female disciples. Nabbed from his residence in Fatehabad’s Shakti Nagar on Thursday, Amar Puri allegedly kept videos of the assaults. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tohana) Joginder Sharma confirmed the same by saying that videos showing Puri sexually assaulting female disciples were recovered from his possession.

A district court on Friday granted police five-days’ remand of the accused and ordered them to investigate further. Reports in some channels of the media have gone ahead to suggest that Puri sexually assaulted as many as 120 of his female disciples. However, no police confirmation regarding the number of victims has been recorded as of yet.
