EWS quota: Jamia Millia Islamia cites minority tag

FEBRUARY 5, 2019

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia will not implement the 10% quota for economically weaker section (EWS) candidates, citing its minority status

The university, in its academic council (AC) meeting on Monday, decided that it won’t send University Grants Commission (UGC) its seat matrix requirements and infrastructure needs. The registrar will communicate to UGC that Jamia will issue its admission notice based on the existing structure.
On January 17, the Union HRD ministry had asked central educational institutions to implement the EWS quota from the 2019-20 session. The institutions were told to furnish the programme-wise seat matrix along with possible financial requirements by January 31. JNU sent it on February 1 while DU is still collating data from its colleges.
“We found that as we are a minority institution, the EWS quota won’t be applicable to us,” said an AC member on the condition of anonymity. “UGC has already said certain institutes and minority institutions will not come under this new system,” he claimed, adding that Jamia had also not implemented the OBC expansion quota.
