Beef kept at Hindu temples, Communal violence rocks Silchar, Assam


Silchar (Assam) : Police had to resort to lathicharge, use of tear gas shells and blank fire to disperse a restive crowd after unidentified miscreants placed animal meat at three temples in the Rongpur area late this evening, which triggered panic here. There are reports that the Cachar SP, Diganta Bora sustained injuries during the clash and has been admitted to hospital.

According to sources, the meat had been kept at Narshing Mandir, Gourio Math and Siva Mandir in Rongpur around 8.30pm in a bid to disrupt communal harmony. This was noticed by local residents who alleged that the meat comprised beef pieces.

As soon as the news spread, people in the vicinity came out in large numbers to protest the incident. An irate mob also blocked the NH-53. Meanwhile, large contingents of Army and CRPF jawans have been deployed at the sensitive spots. Section 144 has also been promulgated in the town. At the time of filing of this report, incidents of stone pelting and vehicles being torched came in from various parts of the town.
