रिक्तपाणीर्नपश्येत राजानं दैवतं गुरुम् | दैवज्ञं पुत्रकं मित्रं फलेन फलमादिशेत् || Meaning: Do not go empty handed to see a king, God, teacher, a learned person, a child or a friend. Invoke fruitfulness with fruit !
न देवा दण्डमादाय रक्षन्ति पशुपालवत् | यं तु रक्षितुमिच्छन्ति बुद्ध्या संविभजन्ति तम् || Meaning: God doesn’t himself take a Stick in his hand to protect someone. But he gives the Intelligence to a person whose safety he wishes, to withstand any attack!
नास्ति विद्यासमं चक्षुर्नास्ति सत्यसमं तपः । नास्ति रागसमं दुःखं नास्ति त्यागसमं सुखम् ॥ Meaning: There is no eye equal to knowledge; there is no penance parallel to truth; there is no pain akin to attachment; there is no happiness synonymous to sacrifice.
न ही कश्चित् विजानाति किं कस्य श्वो भविष्यति । अतः श्वः करणीयानि कुर्यादद्यैव बुद्धिमान् ॥ Meaning: No one knows what is going to happen tomorrow. So one who performs all of tomorrow’s task today is a wise.
विद्वत्वं च नृपत्वं च न एव तुल्ये कदाचन । स्वदेशे पूज्यते राजा विद्वान् सर्वत्र पूज्यते ॥ Meaning: Intelligence and kingdom can never be compared. A king is respected in his own land whereas a wise man is respected everywhere.
उद्यमेनैव हि सिध्यन्ति, कार्याणि न मनोरथै । न हि सुप्तस्य सिंघस्य, प्रविशन्ति मृगाः ॥ Meaning: Things are achieved by doing and not by desiring alone as deers by themselves don’t go into a lion’s mouth.
नारिकेलसमाकारा दृश्यन्तेऽपि हि सज्जनाः । अन्ये बदरिकाकारा बहिरेव मनोहराः॥ Meaning: The nobles are like coconuts, tough outside but soft inside. Others are like jujube fruit, beautiful only outside.
चिता चिंता समाप्रोक्ता बिंदुमात्रं विशेषता । सजीवं दहते चिंता निर्जीवं दहते चिता॥ Meaning: “Chita” and “Chinta” are said to be same still there is a difference of a dot. Pyre(chita) burns the dead while Worry(chinta) burns the alive.
महाजनस्य संसर्गः, कस्य नोन्नतिकारकः। पद्मपत्रस्थितं तोयम्, धत्ते मुक्ताफलश्रियम् ॥ Meaning: For whom is the company of great people not beneficial? Even a water droplet when on lotus petal, shines like a pearl.
