“Gau Rakshak” Chetan Sharma was brutally assaulted by 300-400 butchers on Monday night in Badlapur. The incident took place when Sharma along with a team of 35 to 40 police went to stop illegal butchery.
Mr. Sharma was investigating a lead about an illegal slaughterhouse in Badlapur Earlier Prani Mitra, GoSevak and many other organizations reported that said slaughterhouse being run in Badlapur area. At last, on Monday (24th June) Sharma and 35 to 40 police officers went to raid this illegal slaughterhouse located in Badlapur at the night. However, seeing Sharma and the group of police officers coming toward the butchery, 300-400 butchers were gathered and attacked them. Yet, the police who were also being assaulted did not use lathi or any other weapon against them. Resulting in this, 3-4 butchers assembled and attacked one police officer. One of the butchers took an iron rod and started to beat Sharma with it. Due to getting beaten up by iron rod, his head was injured. As the police could not control the situation, Sharma who had a revolver had to fire in the air.
After noticing this, the police officers saw that Sharma was injured and took him to their car. However, the butchers came near their car, snatched their car keys and attacked it, too. The Police officers managed to escape from that place. But, the mob did not leave them and chased them for at least 25 to 30 km. Later, Sharma was brought in at Ambarnath and was admitted at a nearby hospital. The workers of ‘People for Animals’ were also present there but seeing the injuries, the hospital suggested him to move to another hospital. As a result, he was then admitted to Neptune Hospital in Dombivali. He is in the fragile condition and now being treated in ICU.
Meanwhile, due to such unfortunate assault on Sharma; many other organizations including ‘People for Animals’ who work for animal welfare met the Assistant Police Commissioner of Thane on Tuesday. He promised action will be taken against the assaulters. According to Section 147,143,149 and 353, a case is being registered against the butchers and the police of Badlapur are searching for the accused.

“It was a police raid and a group of butchers attacked Mr. Sharma. We were present in the situation. In self-defense, Mr. Sharma used his gun and fired in the air. Later, we managed to escape out of it and it was our responsibility and now we have lodged against the perpetrators,”
