NAINITAL: Taking cognisance of a letter written by a Delhi-based activist, the Uttarakhand high court said that merely holding meetings and seminars without taking any concrete steps towards cleanliness of Ganga and Yamuna rivers would not yield any results. The court also warned that unless the present situation is improved, both the rivers may lose their existence.
Stating that Saraswati river had already been lost, the court said that if efforts were not made, future generations would only know about these rivers through films and documentaries.
The division bench of justices V K Bisht and Lok Pal Singh directed the state and the central government to maintain cleanliness and piousness of Ganga and Yamuna. The bench stated that the state and central governments should make an effort “to maintain cleanliness, piousness of both the rivers and should take immediate steps to stop dumping of garbage, sewerage and industrial effluents in the rivers.
The bench also stated that the governments should fairly suggest to the court as to what steps have been taken by them to maintain the cleanliness of the two rivers.
The court remarked that the rivers not only provide drinking water but have contributed greatly in the agrarian revolution in the country.
The court had taken cognisance of a letter written to justices of the high court by Ajay Gautam. He said, “I am thankful to the court for treating my letter with so much consideration. This will help in pacing up the process of cleanliness of the holy rivers.”
