3 UP cops suspended after India Today TV expose on fake encounters

India Today TV exposed the practice of fake encounters by some police officers in Uttar Pradesh, Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh has suspended three policemen.

In its expose, India Today TV showed how some policemen are resorting to staged shootouts in exchange of bribes, publicity and promotions.

Ever since the Yogi Adityanath government came to power in UP, more than 60 people have been killed in around 1,500 encounters. The number of people injured is approximately 400.

India Today TV’s investigation has revealed that cops are ready to frame innocent people and kill them in staged encounters for money and promotions.

In Agra Zone, which has accounted for 241 encounters, a sub-inspector in Chitra Hat police station offered to gun down an innocent civilian for around Rs 8 lakh.

Responding to India Today TV’s expose, the office of the DGP in a tweet said the DGP has taken a serious not of the matter. The tweet said three policemen have been suspended.

Talking to India Today TV, the Public Relations Officer of the DGP said the department has taken a serious note of the expose. He said the cops caught on camera have tarnished the image of Uttar Pradesh Police.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Agra, Amit Pathak confirmed that the three policemen have been suspended. “An additional SP-rank officer will conduct the departmental probe,” he said.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have hit out at the BJP government over the issue.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Sunil Sajan said this [India Today TV’s expose] is a “solid proof”.

“We have been saying this. The Yogi government is however busy taking credit for encounters. If the encounters were genuine, the law and order situation in the state would have been under control,” Sajan said.

The Congress claimed that it has been saying that the encounters taking place in the state under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s tenure are “fake” and staged to “terrorise people”.
