CHENNAI: More than 14 years after a series of cases of him sexually exploiting his ‘devotees’ tumbled out and two years after he disappeared, a central crime branch team is in places like Varanasi in search of Venkata Saravanan alias S A R Prasanna Venkatachariar Chaturvedi Swami, a self-styled ‘godman’. A mahila court, which is winding up a trial against Chaturvedi Swami, now 46, has declared him a proclaimed offender.
A senior officer of the central crime branch (CCB), which has issued a lookout circular (LoC) against him, said Chaturvedi Swami had been spotted delivering religious discourses in Varanasi and nearby areas recently and was also seen travelling to Nepal. In 2004, based on a complaint filed by a man, CCB officials booked Chaturvedi Swami under 27 IPC sections apart from Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998.
Inquiries revealed that the ‘godman’ kidnapped the complainant’s daughter and his wife and kept them in his custody for over two years during which he sexually exploited them. He also forcefully collected 15 lakh from the girl’s father as donations for his trust and ‘occupied’ the ground floor of his residence on TTK Road in Alwarpet.
The CCB police then arrested Chathurvedi Swami, R Sripathi, R Sridhar, and his brother R Balu and also named N Manoharan, G Ananthakumar, and E Damodharan in the case. In 2016, CCB officials said, that the examination and cross-examination on of the various witnesses had been completed and the trial was moving towards a conclusion, when the ‘godman’ suddenly disappeared.
Chathurvedi Swami is the managing trustee of an organisation called Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust and often travelled to north India, Nepal and various other locations, even before his arrest in teh said case. Since his disappearance in 2016, a police officer said, had been continuously changing his location and contact details.
