The famous Goddess Mahalaxmi temple in Kolhapur city of Maharashtra has banned the entry of men and women devotees wearing shorts and mini-skirts from October 10. The dress code ‘diktat’ was issued ahead of the beginning of 10-day Shardiya Navaratri festival celebrations.
Notably, October 10 is the first day of Navratra. The Devasthan Management Committee, Western Maharashtra, Kolhapur, took the decision reportedly to maintain the sanctity of the shrine.
There were also reports that some of the devotees were upset to notice that some people were coming to the temple in shorts. And the decision has been taken in a bid to ensure that the issue does not make more people uncomfortable. However, the Committee rejected such reports and said that certain rules had to be followed.
Addressing a news conference last evening, Paschim Maharashtra Devasthan Committee chairman Mahesh Jadhav said the decision was taken in line with the restrictions enforced by Tirupati temple. Jadhav added that those coming to the temple should wear full-length dresses while seeking blessings of the goddess.
“On requests of many devotees, we have appealed to both men and women visiting Mahalaxmi temple in Kolhapur to not wear short clothes. In case, they come wearing short clothes, we will provide them with a facility/room to change clothes,” ANI quoted Jadhav as saying today.
Not only at the Mahalaxmi temple, devotees dressed in shorts or mini-skirts will also not be allowed to enter around 3,000 temples coming under the jurisdiction of Paschim Maharashtra Devasthan Committee.
