A 25-year-old former gun dealer from Poonch district was shot dead by CRPF personnel after he forcibly entered the residence of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Dr Farooq Abdullah at Bhatindi in Jammu on Saturday morning.

Identified as Syeed Murfad Shah, son of Imzad Hussain Shah of Mendhar from Poonch, the deceased was living with his family at Chinore on the outskirts of Jammu city. The deceased had shifted to Jammu with his family in the wake of police busting a fake gun licence racket allegedly involving some revenue officials. While some officials were arrested in the case, Shah had reportedly fled to Gulf. He returned after some time and closed his gun business in Mendhar town, sources said.

According to details provided by sources, the deceased rammed his car into the gate meant for VIP visitors and reached the lounge. As none of the residents were at home, there were few CRPF personnel present at the gate. When the security tried to stop him, a scuffle ensued and he managed to reach the lobby. As Shah started breaking window panes and other furniture inside the house, the CRPF personnel present on the spot shot him dead.
The deceased was unarmed and nothing incriminating was recovered from him. Director General of Police Dr S P Vaid said that the deceased hailed from Poonch and the district SSP has been asked to find out his antecedents.

The deceased’s father Imzad Hussain Shah said that he had gone to the gym in the morning. “The CRPF personnel should not have shot him dead as he had no militant link. He might have been under the influence of some intoxicants,” he added.
Meanwhile, people at Chinore held a demonstration in protest over the killing of Murfad Shah. Farooq Abdullah has been provided Z Plus security cover. There have been attempts on his life by militants earlier in the past too when he was the Chief Minister.
