The People’s Court: Should Mother Teresa be stripped off Bharat Ratna?

July 14, 2018

The allegations of child trafficking at Mother Teresas Missionaries of Charity (MoC) have cast a dark cloud over the goodwill of the institution.

The revelation has led to a war of words between political parties over the sanctity of the Nobel laureates charitable institution.

It is alleged that children were sold in their institution in Jharkhand. However, there are still discrepancies between the exact number of children and the unaccounted pregnancies.

Speaking to India Today, Rajiv Tuli, senior RSS leader said, Mother Teresa got her Bharat Ratna in 1980.

There were allegations of child trafficking within Missionaries of Charity even back then. If there is a shred of evidence to prove that they were indeed indulging in child trafficking, then Mother Teresas Bharat Ratna must be withdrawn.

VHP leader Vinod Bansal said, In the name of charity, MoC is indulging in wrong practices. They take foreign funding to indulge in conversions. What is happening is the pinnacle of exploitative activities.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, It is unbelievable that these sorts of allegations are taking place. They (Missionaries of Charity) cannot be persecuted in this manner.

Speaking on India Todays The Peoples Court, John Dayal, former president, All India Catholic Union said, Why is the RSS jumping in to this? This should be between MoC, the church and the police.

The women who come to Nirmala Hridalaya are destitute women and they come and go. It is hard to determine if many of these pregnant women even gave birth over there.

To this, RSS thinker Raghav Awasthi said, Mother Teresas Bharat Ratna must be taken away as these allegations are extremely serious. India Today investigation reports show that there is no documentation of these pregnancies.

There was a report on India Today channel where a government official said he was not allowed to enter Nirmala Hridalaya by the sisters. If the sisters have a legitimate grievance, the High Court can then coach their complaint. Why is Mamata Banerjee jumping in for them?

Garga Chatterjee, a TMC supporter said, Look at Mother Teresas reputation around the world. She is revered as a bringer of peace not just in Bengal but all around the world. These allegations against Missionaries of Charity are ridiculous, especially after all these years of Mother Teresa being held in such high regard.
